Obituary for Paul E. Sultan PhD

Dr. Paul E. Sultan, Professor of Economics at Southern Illinois University, passed away at 7:14 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at Liberty Village in Maryville.

After serving as a pilot during WWII with the Royal Canadian Air Force, Paul graduated from the University of British Columbia, ultimately obtaining his PhD from Cornell University. Paul was a published author of several books on economics, a humanitarian, a wonderful husband and doting father to five girls. Teaching and economics were a heartfelt passion of his. He taught economics at the University of Southern California, Claremont Graduate School and at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, until his retirement in 1992.

He was born January 26, 1924 in Vancouver, British Columbia, the son of the late John and Selma (Eriksson) Sultan. He married Charlene Schaefer. She survives.
Also surviving are five daughters: Cathy (Richard) Chapin of Gilbert, AZ, Laura Sultan of Boulder Creek, CA, Jennifer (Charlie) Fowler of Edwardville, Kristen Sultan of Edwardsville and Debbie (Tom) Sultan-Corradini of Edwardsville; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ralph (the late Shirley) Sultan of Vancouver, BC.

Besides his parents, he was preceded by three sisters: Edith Pincott, Eleanor Walker and Doris Holmquist; and two brothers: Sig Sultan and Bill Sultan.

A celebration of Paul’s life will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at the home of Charlene Sultan in Edwardsville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois on Paul’s behalf.
